How to Scale-Up Social Purpose

You will first notice her bright and welcoming smile. A conversation with her will win you a slew of thoughtful questions. And in between this thought-provoking interaction (if you are lucky) she may give you her #foodietips.

Meet Mỹ Tâm H. Nguyễn, Social Change Catalyst and CEO of làmdi

Mỹ Tâm H. Nguyễn, Social Change Catalyst and CEO of làmdi

Meet a social impact catalyst and change-maker, Mỹ Tâm H. Nguyễn. She is the founder and CEO of làmdi, which provides executive coaching, consulting, and support for scaling up impact-driven ventures. An impassioned community leader, Mỹ Tâm is advancing a wide range of socio-political issues through her work and life.

I met Mỹ Tâm a few years ago, as part of Amazon's Imagine, conference, for nonprofits. Since then, we have shared thoughts about what are the most effective ways to carry out social change, and in this journey, discovered our shared passion for driving change through grass root and community-driven efforts.

"I grew up in low-income housing. From being raised by a single mom, to graduating from University of Washington (UW), then attending Harvard. My range of experiences from being a public servant in urban planning, managing political campaigns, to being a founder in tech and startups and launching companies, allows me to bridge a range of experiences."

Mỹ Tâm graduated from UW in International Studies and Journalism. During her under-graduate studies, she found a strong platform to blossom into a student leader. She then attended Harvard University, to concentrate in international urban planning and housing.

Her lived experiences give her a solid foundation to drive systems change in government, startups, foundations, and nonprofits across the U.S. and in Europe. In the past, she has worked closely with the City of Seattle and as part of Gov. Jay Inslee's social media communications team. She serves on the board for Community Credit Lab. She has also served as a mentor and advisor for Ashoka Foundation’s Youth Venture and the Seattle Art Museum. All while battling lymphoma.

Recently, in the wake of the pandemic, she collaborated with national and global partners to evacuate 1,000+ women, families, and children out of Kabul in Afghanistan. She wants to continue making an impact on the most marginalized sections of humankind.

Mỹ Tâm tells me that "làm đi" translates to "work it" in Vietnamese. I think leaders like Mỹ Tâm not only live that spirit of innovating but also keep inspiring others who want to make a positive change.
