Building MovingWorlds as a Sustainable, Scalable and Accountable Social Purpose Corporation

The world's most pressing global challenges can't be solved alone, they need a strong community. Mark Horoszowski, has built MovingWorlds, a global platform for talent fueling social impact.

Rapidly changing political economy, evolving consumer expectation and business incentives have supported businesses favoring profit and purpose. Entreprenuers who care about making a positive social impact need to relate to a larger ecosystem that supports social change.  What kind of support do such social entrepreneurs on the ground really need to succeed?

The world's most pressing global challenges can't be solved in isolation, it needs a strong community.

Headquartered in Seattle (USA), MovingWorlds operates a remote team with staff across six countries and four continents.

Based in Seattle, Mark Horoszowski, Co-founder of MovingWorlds.org has been instrumental in bringing together non-profits, social impact businesses and talent. He calls it Experteering. By connecting the right skills to the right organizations, MovingWorlds teams have completed 1,800 projects in 122 countries, unleashing over $25 Million USD worth of pro-bono expertise. To further scale its impact, MovingWorlds launched the TRANSFORM Support Hub in partnership with SAP TRANSFORM, Unilever, and others to provide even more support to social enterprises, and to provide a place where professionals can go to learn more about using their careers to support social good.

Founded in 2012, Mark launched MovingWorlds to help social enterprises around the world connect with skilled professionals willing to volunteer their expertise. Since then, the MovingWorlds team has grown into a globally distributed, B-Corp certified, Social Purpose Corporation (SPC). "We think about how we are creating social impact in all areas of our business. It's through strategy, operations, governance, and marketing. We think about fair employee compensation, diversity and inclusion and impact measurement. We publish a Living Social Impact Report every year." he explains.

Weaving social impact in every area of business is crucial. How do organizations like MovingWorlds gain trust? For SPCs, such MovingWorlds, a third-party accreditation brings accountability and enforcement rigor. "Being B-Corp certified is a mark of distinction reserved for those SPC’s that meet B-Lab’s standards" Horoszowski elaborates. "These are widely recognized and trusted by consumers and investors alike. It justifies the SPCs' social purpose, validates its decision-making, and certifies its impact. But keep in mind that achieving a B-Corp certification is an outcome – what is most important are the way you lead your organization to account not only for end-beneficiary impact, but that you also uphold yourself to high standards to serve your employees, community, partners, other stakeholders, and the planet at large. You should be on a continuous improvement journey to reduce any negative externalities while living into your theory of change and impact.

In times when the social, political, and economic environment seeks meaningful impact from organizations, we need intentional and systematic efforts.
