Life of Purpose: Shirley Bowlin, the Heart of Soroptimist Anacortes
At 86, Shirley continues to manage the bustling Soroptimist Thrift Shop in Anacortes, Washington—a hub of generosity, community, and transformation. Shirley’s story is one of quiet tenacity, lifelong learning, and an unwavering belief in the power of women helping women.
Her journey with Soroptimist International of Anacortes began not with a grand vision, but through the recommendation of a friend who was already a member. "After hearing from her about all the good things Soroptimist does—locally, nationally, and internationally—I knew I wanted to be a part of this outstanding organization," Shirley says.
Soroptimist International is a global volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls through programs that lead to social and economic empowerment. With clubs in over 120 countries, Soroptimist members focus on education, gender equality, and community service to create lasting change at local and global levels.
One of the Anacortes’ club’s longest-running efforts is its free medical equipment loan program, in operation since 1954. Providing walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs, and more to those in need, the program exemplifies the Soroptimist spirit: service, dignity, and practical impact.
The crown jewel of the Anacortes club is its Thrift Shop, which Shirley has managed for the past four years. Thanks to its success, the club can fund scholarships, support international water projects, and give local girls opportunities to attend camps or participate in sports programs—support that often makes the difference between exclusion and empowerment.
Shirley’s Story of Community-First Leadership
Shirley has served as President of the club three times and has held nearly every leadership role on the board.
These roles didn't just give her a platform to serve; they shaped her into the leader she is today. “I was very shy and insecure when I first became Club President. But it taught me to be a better listener, a problem solver, and more confident in myself,” she reflects.
“Through it all, Shirley’s favorite part of the work remains the same: “I love the camaraderie of working with other women. I’ve learned so much—how to manage a business, create spreadsheets, solve pricing issues, and most importantly, support people when they need it most.” In fact, it’s common for people at the shop to seek Shirley out—whether for practical advice or simply a warm hug.”
Her extraordinary leadership and lifelong dedication to service were recently recognized with a nomination for the Inspire Positive Aging Awards (IPAA) by Sound Generations—an honor that highlights her as a beacon of purpose and perseverance in her community.
Even now, Shirley is not slowing down.
“Her sights remain set on the Soroptimist mission: helping women and girls live their best lives. “I plan to stay active in committee work and attend conferences as I can. There’s still so much good we can do together.””
When asked what “higher purpose” means to her today, Shirley smiles: it’s the community, the connections, and the daily acts of service that fill her days with meaning. “I’m lucky to be highly respected, but more than anything, I’m just happy to still be part of something that matters.”
